In a world where sustainability is no longer a buzzword but a necessity, COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers has just upped the ante. Meet the Green Qingdao, the latest addition to their fleet of eco-friendly multipurpose vessels. This 77,000 dwt powerhouse isn’t just a ship—it’s a statement. A statement that the future of shipping is green, efficient, and ready to tackle the challenges of a rapidly evolving global economy.
A Ship Built for Tomorrow
On February 19, 2025, COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Dalian) yard witnessed the christening of the Green Qingdao, a vessel that redefines what it means to be eco-friendly in the maritime industry. Stretching 225 meters in length, with a beam of 32.2 meters and a depth of 21 meters, this ship is a marvel of modern engineering. But it’s not just its size that’s impressive—it’s what’s inside that counts.
The Green Qingdao is the fifteenth vessel in COSCO’s 77,000-ton multipurpose series, designed to transport everything from high-speed trains and wind power equipment to new energy vehicles and large machinery. Its box-shaped cargo holds are equipped with rotary dehumidifiers, ensuring optimal storage conditions for even the most sensitive cargo. This isn’t just a ship; it’s a mobile logistics hub for the green economy.
Sustainability Meets Innovation
What sets the Green Qingdao apart is its commitment to sustainability. Conceptualized as a vessel that prioritizes energy efficiency, it’s a testament to COSCO’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint. The ship’s design incorporates cutting-edge technologies that minimize energy consumption while maximizing cargo capacity. It’s a win-win for both the environment and the bottom line.
Once operational, the Green Qingdao will ply the South America-East Coast route, transporting new energy vehicles and containers from Chinese ports to Brazil. This route is a critical artery in the global supply chain, and the Green Qingdao is poised to make it greener.
A Fleet for the Future
The Green Qingdao is just the latest in a series of eco-friendly vessels from COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers. The company currently operates a fleet of over 160 specialized vessels, with more than 50 newbuild multipurpose units delivered in recent years. These vessels, ranging from 62,000 to 77,000 dwt, are part of COSCO’s broader strategy to lead the charge in sustainable shipping.
In July 2024, COSCO christened the Green Itajai, another 77,000 dwt multipurpose pulp vessel, followed by three more energy-efficient carriers in August 2024: the COSCO SHIPPING Ji Xiang, COSCO SHIPPING Ru Yi, and Green Munguba. And let’s not forget the MV Yuan Fu, the second unit in the 62,000 dwt multipurpose heavy lift vessel series, which joined the fleet in mid-September 2024. With 10 more vessels in this series scheduled for delivery by the end of 2025, COSCO is clearly betting big on a greener future.
